How Darren Loses His First Baby Tooth Episode 2

Following my earlier blog on Darren’s bleeding gum and tooth due to the fall last night, I am relieved when the dentist said that he does not have to go through a tooth extraction. Phew! He might not have to lose his front tooth afterall! Doctor has prescribed antibiotics, painkiller and cream that safe him from the agony of pain.

 

This is his first visit to the dentist and I am afraid that he might not be prepared. Hence, I tried to mentally assure him that things will be fine.

 Mummy: Darren is a brave boy and must not cry or struggle later.

 Darren: I scared ……..<showing his usual cute face>

 Mummy:  Gor Gor (meaning elder brother) has gone through this many times already and if Gor Gor can make it, you can make it.

 Darren: Gor Gor also make teeth before and never cry?! I want mummy to go in with me later.

 

Mummy: Yes, he never cry. Of course I will be by your side. Doctor will help to make you feel better and you can start eating normally again.

 Darren: <silence>……

 Mummy: Later papa (father) is also going to see the same doctor. Darren will compete with papa. If Darren never cry, Darren will be the WINNER. <This is a common term used by my boys in their constant competition with each other for everything under the sun. I guess “I hit the jackpot” and used the right term that is close to his heart and his face brightened up>.

 While patiently waiting for the doctor while time ticked by, I decided to raise his awareness of proper dental care from the pamphlet in the clinic. Found the brochure informative and I came back to learn more from its source:

How Darren Loses His First Baby Tooth

I am not sure whether Darren is hyperactive or merely just getting too excited…..quite unlikely since he can’t possibly be excited everyday. He has been jumping, running and dashing right into everybody at home for the last few weeks.

Well, while running around aimlessly at home last night, he fell, had a cut on his lip with bleeding and loosened front tooth.  Seeing a swollen lip and gum, papa’s first aid method was to put ice on it. Darren is still feeling the pain especially on the tooth and gum…Snap some ”memoric ” shots of the first baby tooth that he is saying goodbye to.

It is natural for kids to fall and get injured and then either they learn or don’t learn a lesson. In this case, at least it tames down his “hyperactiveness” for now. It is just a pity that he is loosing his front tooth earlier than expected and he is suffering unnecessary pain.

More water, fewer sweet drinks
“Many sugary beverages, including sports and juice drinks, are being marketed as healthy,” says Dr. Wang. Avoid ones with added sugar, and keep 100% fruit juice to two 4- to 6-oz servings daily.

Limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day
Less than an hour for kids younger than 6. TV is particularly bad partly because kids snack while watching—and also because they’re exposed to food advertising.

Make sure they play actively for at least an hour most days of the week
This can be as simple as running around outside, and it doesn’t have to be all at once (playing tag, throwing a ball around and riding a bike all count). Don’t use being active as an excuse to let your kids have a “treat.” To burn off one can of soda, a child would need to do about 60 minutes of brisk walking!
