A Sheltered Life
We took a wrong turn while driving to Marina Barrage, Singapore, a few weeks ago and caught a glimpse of this scene.
It was a Sunday evening and many foreign workers were either rushing to go back to their dormitory or night’s off. The lorry was very packed and moving. Undaunted, these guys were chasing after the moving lorry and some even scurrying to hold onto the side of the lorry – simply to get a ride to their destination. Although this is a situation that I have seen in some other countries during my overseas trips, it is certainly not a common sight in Singapore. For my boys, it seems rare to see people hang on the side of a moving lorry (which is extremely dangerous) and they found it amusing (probably they perceived it as stunts).
To me, our children and us could be too well sheltered and provided for. Living in a sheltered nation, we might not be able to understand the hardships that others have to go through in life.
Just a passing scene but I do want my children to realize that “they are very fortunate to have a comfortable and sheltered life” and “never to take things for granted”.
This is so true. Sometimes I feel as if my children - especially the younger three - act as if they are entitled to. It would be good to show them how others live and exist.
I truly agree with you:)
