Old Stuff You Will Not Discard

Recently, I read from the papers about a survey conducted on “the old items that some people will not discard”.  So, people might not want to throw their book collections or a childhood doll given by parents. In any case, all have their personal reasons. So, what are the old stuff that you will not discard or give away?

As I was clearing my house the other day, naturally, I also have the inclination not to throw away certain old stuff.

{So, I am a sentimental person because I choose to keep those collection of gifts from my family, photographs that bring me down memory lane, and stuff that I used my first earnings to buy}.

When I have a family of four, naturally, I choose to consult before I discard their things.

{It could be a headache if I had to clear the old stuff alone because clearing is never a top prioirity of Papa Ed’s time schedule and for the boys, given a chance, they will prefer to keep most of their stuff even though they hardly touch them anymore}.

However, I get the boys involved anyway in filtering the old stuff that they will discard or give away.  Some might practise making the decisions for their children.  For me, I believe that consultation will prevent feelings of disappointment, give the boys the opportunities to make some priorities in life, and let them think through the values of things and even money.

{Who knows one day, things that they make the decision to keep now, will become a memorable item in their life. As kids, they also tend to have rekindled interests over some items, Out of The Blue, Sometimes, Somehow}.

Of course, when there are differing opinions with the boys on “what they deem as retainable”, it helps to explain to them why certain items have to go. It is also useful to start them early on awareness of recycling and donation, rather than simply discard the old stuff into the garbage bin.

So, I am a sentimental person, judging from the stuff that I will not discard.  Here is my assessment of the boys’ objectives, judging from the stuff that they will not discard.

Brendan

  • Books
  • Old gameboy
  • Stuff that he spent time making with mommy (eg. jigsaws)

{He is a loyal follower (of an author), values all his old game sets, and is definitely sentimental.}

Darren

  • Pokemons
  • A blue toy bus (at least for this moment)
  • Most toys
  • HOME

{Haha, he is a young boy afterall and his life is made “perfect”with toys and fun. So, a fun-loving boy and definitely a practical one because he knows that he needs a ROOF, and HOME is where FAMILY is}.

As for you, what are the old stuff that you will not discard or give away? Try this exercise with your family members or kids, and see what they value most:)

it’s hard to throw away all those children story books that I bought for my children and they hardly read them.

  • It’s really hard to throw away those books and toys that my son really loves. I am controlling of buying new toys that I know will lot last longer and concentrate on buying books because books are essential.
