Chopsticks

Have you used chopsticks before?  If yes, how good are you in holding the chopsticks?

I am not sure whether I am using the right technique to hold a pair of chopsticks but I definitely have no problem using a pair for my meal *smile*.

Chopsticks are believed to originate from China and not only are there different styles of chopsticks used in different cultures, there are different chopsticks etiquettes. Click HERE to know more about these interesting facts.

In Chinese restaurants and Chinese food stalls here in Singapore, chopsticks are still widely used. In Brendan’s and Darren’s school, the boys are required to eat with chopsticks if they purchase food from certain stalls.  I still recall Brendan avoiding certain stalls because he does not know how to eat with chopsticks.

Talking about the two boys, they have different abilities in adapting to the use of chopsticks. Darren mastered the use of chopsticks as young as 4 years old.  In fact, he is a pro and he enjoys holding  a pair. Brendan picked up the skill only at 9 years old and still prefers using the fork.

Of course, we could have asked for a fork instead at the Chinese restaurants. However, we believe in letting our boys use chopsticks sometimes and most importantly keeping a part of this tradition of Chinese dining culture in them……

So, if you have young children, have they used the chopsticks before? How young were they when they grasped the skill?
