On Vacation

Parent Times is taking a short break. We are finally on our overseas vacation! Will be back soon! Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend:)

Vacation Break

We took a short break from Singapore (to our neighbouring country Malaysia) since it was a long weekends and a last vacation break before I turn a year older tomorrow. I believe this is a common choice for Singaporeans who grab the chance of spending time out of Singapore whenever there is a longer weekends.

Though it has been countless times that we have visited Kuala Lumpur (KL), Genting and Johor Bahru in Malaysia, well…well…this trip never fails to bring forth its own story of excitement being the First Time for many other things. This is the First Time that :

1)    we drove my new car to a distant land and surprise surprise because the air-conditioning of the car (supposed to be brand new too) decided to throw its tantrum and stopped releasing any cold air on a burning hot day! Yes, we could have kept the car windows opened but I was so afraid that the dirty particles in the outside air would create acnes on my face and so sorry boys, we were like baked chickens in an oven for half-hour till the air-conditioning decided to do fair justice again by making itself worked again suddenly!

2)    we encountered an impossible traffic jam of 3 hours along the second link between Tuas Singapore and Malaysia. It is definitely a common sight to face a serious traffic jam along the link between Woodlands Singapore and Johor Malaysia but such an encounter along the second link is definitely our first time especially when we noted that there is no good reason for the jam in the first place when there was no accident. The check at the Malaysia Custom was brisk anyway.

3)    my domestic helper followed us for this trip to KL and it was really an experience because even before we stepped out of Singapore Custom, she started her  vomiting marathon. Then the vomiting continued for the 8-hour driving trip (including the traffic jam) and we had to hold our breath throughout in case she might just throw out onto any of the boys, onto the car mat, car seat and I was really thankful to that one “McDonalds” plastic bag that we obtained because that was the collection bag for her vomiting output. The air-conditioning breakdown and the stench of the vomit made breathing almost impossible and that was it. I gave up and all windows were wind down and the experience on the trip was self-explanatory!

4) Darren fell sick while we are on overseas vacation. He has just joined me on the sickroll as I had been having this bad throat infection for many days.

5)    We have been told that we have to start queuing really in the early morning (amidst my supposed to be relaxing vacation) just to be granted admission to The Petronas Twin Towers. To our dismay, luck was not on our side again as we once again failed to enter the Twin Towers (since many years ago) even at 11 plus in the morning because according to the attendant, free admission is allowed for a maximum number of pax who started queuing early hour in the morning…I wonder when they are gonna change the admission system…Fortunately, the trip was still considered a fulfilling one since it was right choice of hotel at KL and right weather at Genting Highlands that enabled us to have a half day of outdoor fun at the outdoor Theme Park.

1)    The spacious layout at Berjaya Times Square Hotel (although service was unexpectedly disappointing) offers an ideal room type for the boys since they had great fun playing hide and seeks in the different sections of the room.

  2)    It was not foggy or raining at Genting Highlands and finally we made it for a continuous few hours of outdoor fun at the theme park (something that we paid for but didn’t manage to enjoy just 3 months ago).

3)    Our 3 musketeers (including Papa Ed) never fail to enjoy themselves when it comes to playing arcade games.

 4)    I managed to squeeze out that amazing time out of a tight schedule (when the kids are bathing in the hotel room) to buy myself another 5 new pairs of shoes and 2 blouses. All thanks to the convenience of Berjaya Times Square Hotel which is well-linked to the mega shopping complex.

Perhaps, I should author a book on “how to make full use of time while having a short holiday”. Imagine that we managed to go theme park after theme park, game arcade, watch movie, wasted trip to The Twin Towers, shopping, eating and eating, spent hours at traffic jam, zoom from KL to Genting Highlands to Johor Bahru, all within 2 short days. My friend always teases me that I have been spending more hours on aeroplane, in car, coaches etc. than I spend hours at the actual places that I visit.

5)    The boys will always have an enjoyable time as long as their Nintendo DS game sets are with them.

 6)    Papa Ed has easy access to internet anywhere he is.For me, as long as the family is together, it doesn’t matter where the destination is and as long as the boys have a good time, I am happy.
