Where Have The Phones Gone?

With mobile phones, it is not easy to locate a public phone nowadays.

That day when the battery in my mobile phone ran flat while I was in a shopping mall and I did not have easy access to charging my handphone’s battery, I felt so constrained and my greatest saviour at that moment was “PHEW! I am so glad that Brendan’s mobile phone is in my bag!”

Well, this shows our heavy reliance on phone.

[I seriously wonder how I could survive the early 1990s with no mobile phones. At least, we have easy access to public phones then.]

Then, that day when we were at the MRT station, these are the empty public phone booths that we came across.

Where have the phones gone to?

Talking about giving our children independance and letting our 11-year old Brendan have his freedom to be out on his own.

Then, my many “What-ifs” start crowding my head even though it will be a few more months before I start allowing Brendan to travel alone.

What if Brendan’s handphone battery run flat?”

“What if he cannot locate a public phone to reach me when he forgets to bring along his handphone?”

etc.

So, how could we parents stay away from giving our children “handphones” when there are now more empty public phone booths with no phones or hardly any public phones in sight? Like it or not, many young children are carrying handphones now. Some even with smart phones.

Honestly, I will be worried dead if Brendan had difficulty sourcing for a phone just to inform us that he would be late for home.

Haha. I suppose then we would have to rely on TELEPATHY:)

Sometimes I feel nostalgic about the old days like using coins in a pay phone to make a call, before there were mobile phones. Life is easier now but it was more interesting then.

It is always good to have a good old backup. The traditional phone is definitely a more reliable way of communication. It is sad they are almost disappeared. Share the same worry that in time of needs, the good old phone is no longer there :(

Not to worry about Brendan being able to contact you. They all have them. He could use some else’s phone.

hahaha Telepathy wud be an excellent choice… IF ONLY we cud master it. :D Yeah, we’re so reliant on hp these days. I’ll feel really uneasy if I’d left my fon at home when I’m out. But it’s really vy useful during emergencies.
