A New Education Journey
By next week, both my boys will be in Primary School. Darren will be joining Brendan in the same Primary School of our choice. This marks a new education journey for Darren and a new milestone for us.
I am not so certain that Darren is ready for his new life in the Primary School as his behaviour still very much resembles that of an adorable baby who needs much care. Papa Ed, however, is positive that he will “adjust”and survive” once he adapts to the new environment and education system. As a parent, I am certain of the challenges ahead, especially when I have now 2 and not only 1 boy in the Primary School.
Recalling 4 years ago, when Brendan was in Primary 1, I was an inexperienced mother, unfamiliar with the new education system then and not really well-prepared to accustom him to a different school life. Those years were not easy since Papa Ed was mostly overseas. I managed alone with making every little plan for Brendan and using the best method to adjust ourselves, and also guide him in his studies. Perhaps, the fact that only I could be personally involved, has helped greatly in my “parental learning process” then. Alas…we managed well.
Now, when it is Darren’s turn, I will not claim that I have accustomed as I have a new challenge ahead- that is to manage 2 kids’ primary education at the same time. I will have to further improve my “multi-tasking” skill and “brain diversion” power, and “squeeze” out even more time, especially when I am still holding a full-time career, sad to say that I am not having a domestic helper for a while (after some “nightmares”), and with Papa Ed on his ad-hoc overseas assignment. Yes, this is what makes it all challenging.
Imagine…..
- Requirements have doubled. 2 sets of school books and stationery items and extra need for tuition.
- Responsibilities have doubled. More time to coach and monitor. More schedules to remember. More school involvements on my part. 1 more kid to prepare for school examination. And……
- Expectations have doubled.
However, available resources and available time have not doubled, to cope with our rising needs. {How I wish….}.
Despite all the above……
Tough it will be. Yet, I believe that we will MANAGE, just like we always do. This is the greatness and challenges of parenthood. We grow and develop with our kids and we ultimately become stronger. Nothing seems impossible for parents when we are driven by the well-being of our children.
“Every journey of the child and parenthood is - a new and fulfilling experience for the parent.”

So, we will strive on. Wish us good luck:)
