Good Old Times - Tanjong Pagar Railway Station

The June school holidays has been full of lessons on history and culture for our boys as we visit museum, cultural streets in Singapore and latest - the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station.

[That's the perk of not having to work because we can arrange time to travel to parts of Singapore where our boys have hardly set foot before. Hey Boys! Singapore is not only about shopping, movies, theme parks, beaches and parks.]

Lately crowds have been flocking to this railway station to catch a last glimpse and have a farewell meal here before it ceases operations from 1 July 2011.   The station has been an important landmark of Singapore’s heritage, being a key public transportation facility between Singapore and Malaysia.

Many of us have mixed feelings about the cessation of railway service, though:(

For me, I used to work in an office building within walking distance to the railway station.  I recalled during lunch time rushing here excitedly to purchase pairs of train tickets to Malaysia. To Papa Ed and I, we were walking down memory lane as we visited it a last time.  We used to have ‘romantic’ train rides from here while dating:)

We used to be frequent passengers, boarding the train here, when we travelled to Johor Bahru regularly before our boys were borned.  It’s great to revisit it together:)  pic31

I still miss those days when we used to travel by railway train. Now, if I suggest, I will be asked “Why bother when we can drive?”

Somehow, the experience is just different….

The next time, we will have to make a trip to Bukit Timah to view the only railway station in operation in Singapore
