New Pets for Kids
We were at a pet shop yesterday when Darren saw some hamsters and immediately fell in love with them. Brendan was eyeing the terrapins too. We left the shop without buying because we wanted to make sure that the kids will bear and understand the responsibility of keeping pets before buying any for them.
“I want to buy hamster, I want to buy hamster”, Darren continued pestering us whole night for the hamster. I decided to ask him to give me reasons why we should let him keep the hamster and he was telling me that he likes hamster and he also likes taking care of them. We agreed to let them keep pets eventually only after they agreed that they will take good care of them and help ensure that their pets are fed and clean and not to neglect them.
We visited a few pet shops again today. Serangoon North Avenue 4 and Pasir Ris Farmway in Singapore house a number of pet shops. The boys were totally excited by the varieties of hamsters. We let them picked their own hamsters and finally we welcome 4 more members to our home - 2 hamsters (Cuddly for Brendan and Fluffy for Darren) and 2 terrapins (Huang Huang for Brendan and Le Le for Darren). In this way, both boys’ wishes have come true and Brendan has his first close encounter with “Cuddly” and “Huang Huang” as he held them close in his hands. Darren was too tired after his whole day of trip that he fell asleep before he could hold his new pets.
It is certainly not cheap to keep pets as we have to buy the cage, running wheel, other accessories and toys, bath sand and food for the hamsters. However, as parents, our smiles are brighter than anyone else when we see our kids elated, and learning the sense of responsibility to take care of others.
Hi, I found your blog on The Mom Blogs. Love it!
I understand the whole pet thing. I grew up on a farm and we had TONS of animals. My kids are still really small, but they know the animals stay at grandma’s. We live in an apartment, and can’t have pets. I’m totally okay with it too :)
