Celebrate Philippines

It was more than a decade ago when I was in Philippines for a trade mission. I had the opportunity to stay in Manila and Cebu. I had deep impressions of the beautiful island of Cebu, the tasty mangoes, the spanish culture and the melodious songs.
Although I was  affected by the monsoon storm and flooding, it helped me to see the other side of life <Living in a well-sheltered country like Singapore, it is no wonder that we are touched by the strength of others who have to live through natural calamity>.  I saw kids walking with water level up to their waists, houses which were half covered by flood in the outskirt of Manila and yet they were still having cheerful spirits <Shame on us and how protected are our kids back in Singapore.>
Almost everywhere I went, I ordered mango juice and I even purchased a basket of mangoes back to Singapore.

At the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore, one gets to know the culture and civilisations of the different parts  of Asia. One can enjoy the ancient and valuable display pieces/artefacts, rich in Asian’s cultural and historical values, at the galleries here …… and the best thing is without having to step out of Singapore.

As the Asian Civilisations Museum was featuring the special programme on “Celebrate Philippines” ….yes! with free admissions to galleries, goodie bags, free ice cream, cooking demonstrations of Filipino’s delicacies, and free exciting performances and fun for the family….on last weekend (unfortunately special performances only for two days), we naturally made our way there with my mom!  It was an eye-opener as we got closer to the exquisite displays in the galleries and the kids definitely were not bored as they were kept occupied by the dances and Filipino martial arts performance. My mom was awed by the religious artefacts.

The special exhibition on “Land of the Morning: The Philippines and its People” is still on at the Museum till 10 Jan 2010. For more details about the museum and the special exhibitions, you may visit http://www.acm.org.sg.

We had an educational trip for both ourselves, the kids and my mom and it was definitely a half day well-spent:)

Singapore Art Exhibition

Singapore Art Museum was one of the places where we had our wedding photographs taken and I still have a nostalgic feeling over the place.  Since Singapore Art Exhibition, “Art Buffet Singapore”, is held at the Singapore Art Museum from 22 August to 18 October 2009, we brought the boys to view the art exhibits at Singapore Art Museum. It has been a long time since I last visited an art exhibition and it would be in support of Singaporean’s art and creative works.

[Details: For the Art Buffet Singapore, artists from all disciplines can submit their works based on 12 themes which include Body, Craft, Food, Material, Ritual, Spectrum, Signs, Gesture, Time, Space, Order and Humour. The winning submission will be awarded a Prize in the form of S$50,000 grant which can be used for professional or capability development.]

Actually, before we went, I was uncertain about the kids’ interests over art exhibits or whether they have the patience to go round with papa and mommy enjoying others’ works.  Errr….. I was half right  because while Brendan at least showed a little interest by asking some questions, Darren was probably more excited to post  for his personal photos. The kids’ understandings of art are minimal. To them, art means mainly the pictures that they have drawn and also handmade gifts that they have made. It is no wonder that they do not understand how the exhibits, which include photography works, gadgets built and space set-up, are parts of the exhibitions.

It certainly needs much creativity, good imaginations and skills to be an artist. The contributors of the submissions have certainly put in good efforts.
