Kite Flying
When we were young, we used to fly those square-shaped kites anywhere around our neighbourhood.
Those kites were much more precious to us then because we used our best efforts to make them.
Those days, our kite strings would be so sharp that they would cut each other as soon as they are in contact.
Now that we have grown older, we still bring our boys for kite flying except that we buy the kites and they come in so MANY DESIGNS and ARE BIGGER. Oh yeah, you can do stunts with them too, provided you can handle those stunt kites, hehe.
And we do have to travel a little now to fly our kites - not like previously when we could just fly them at our doorsteps in the kampung.
So, our boys are lucky to own many “designs” of kites before.
Our latest kite
From designs of aeroplanes, to cartoons, to animals…..these kites are priced reasonably although each does not cost the few cents during our time.
Some of them took off into the sky and we could never get them back again, one got stuck onto a tree, others got damaged over time, and some got intertwined with others.
We used to take part in Kite Festivals but it could be difficult finding any less crowded spot during these festivals:(
A favourite spot that Singaporeans gather for kite flying is - Marina Barrage.
It has great view there and it is a place that we get to see all designs of kites in the sky.
Although the wind might not be to our advantage all the time here, I would say kite-flying is still an activity to build our kids’ patience.
Imagine pulling the string, running and the kite takes off a little above ground. Then the kite would fall to the ground shortly after a while. Then our boys would try again and again, each time getting excited when the kite lasts a little longer above ground level. Eventually, when the kite manages to soar into the sky, the feeling of achievement is enormous. And they could have so much fun, just chasing the kite.
By the way, our favourite spots to fly kites are still at Sengkang. There are some empty plots here where people gather and at least over here we have more moving space:)

Kite Festival 2009
One of my family’s past times is kite flying. It is wonderful to see my kids running carefreely while pulling the strings of their kites and it is a nice view to see many kites soaring in the sky together, especially in their different designs and patterns. I have written several posts before on kite flying experiences and venues in Singapore. A reader introduced me to stunt kites and I have seen more people having fun with them.
We came across an advertisement on an inaugural NTUC Income Kite Flying Festival in Singapore on 29 and 30 August. The event is free and will be held at West Coast Park, Grand Lawn. There will be music and dance performances, together with kite flying tips by kite Masters.
We cannot wait for the days to come to join other kite flyers at the Kite Festival and also enjoy the free performances! My boys will enjoy playing “catching” in the wide open field.
Here is a short video clip on the amazing performance of stunt kite. Enjoy viewing!
Finally We Join The Kite Flyers
We finally joined the kite flying crowd at the land besides Farmway LRT station in Sengkang, Singapore. To our disappointment, the wind was not too strong. Out S$2 kite did not manage to stay in the sky for too long.
My three muskateers managed to have their fair share of fun RUNNING ….. running to lift the kite up the sky, running to keep the kite in the sky (since there is hardly any wind) and running after the kite once it started flying in the sky. It was quite a funny sight!
I managed to capture the photos of those colourful kites which are doing their best to soar in the sky without the natural element of a strong wind. Though the view was not as awesome as last week, it was still quite a nice display in the sky…and it is always so peaceful to view these kites soaring carefreely.
By the way, I discovered that the 7-Eleven Store at Anchorvale Community Club (opposite the current hot-favourite spot for kite-flying) sells low-cost and basic kites :)
